Eric Coles.

Dr. Coles is a research biochemist with extensive experience in biotech startups and drug development. He has had research appointments at Columbia Medical School and Harvard Medical School. He has also held positions at Arthur D. Little, Picker International, Corning Medical, Packard Instruments, ICN Pharmaceuticals, MeiRui Pharma, Pagoda Pharmaceuticals, SonoGene LLC as well as founder of Alexon Biomedical and Xickle LLC.

Along with his research and business background, Eric has become keenly interested in all things “scientific,” especially things related to astronomy. In the last ten years that interest has been directed to photographing the Cosmos, what we call Astrophotography. Additionally, he and almost everyone else on earth, has been inspired by the images from the Hubble Space Telescope and other high-resolution instruments both in space and on earth.

Advances in camera technology now allow amateur astrophotographers to take images of deep space objects (galaxies, nebula and star clusters) that surpass what professional astronomers could do even twenty-five years ago. Almost as important is that enthusiasts like Dr. Coles can focus on the beauty of the objects in our universe, rather than the science behind them as is the interest of most astronomers.

Dr. Coles specialty is astrophotography of emission, bright and dark nebula. He has refined the technique of producing Hubble Palette images from these emission nebulae in order to bring out the subtle variation of colors in each of the sub areas of the nebula. The results of this new multi-level technique can be seen in all his latest images.

A selection of Dr. Coles’ astrophotography can now be seen in the exhibit at the Fermilab Gallery. This represents only a fraction of the more than six-hundred images he has taken and processed over the past nine years. His astrophotography is recognized worldwide for its representation of these deep space objects and for their detail and artistry as well. To date ten of his images have been selected as the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) and shown on the APOD.Nasa.gov website. A large collection of Eric’s astrophotography images can be seen online at https://www.astrobin.com/users/coles44/.
